What is an ADL assessment?

An ADL (Activities of Daily Living) assessment is a structured evaluation that helps identify a person’s ability to perform daily tasks safely and efficiently. ADLs are divided into two categories:

Personal Activities of Daily Living (PADLs): Essential self-care tasks

These are the core activities needed for personal care and include:

  • Personal hygiene – bathing, grooming, and oral care
  • Dressing – selecting and putting on clothing
  • Eating and drinking – using utensils and preparing simple meals
  • Toileting – managing continence and personal hygiene
  • Mobility – moving safely around the home, getting in/out of bed or a chair

Instrumental Activities of Daily Living (IADLs): Independent living skills

These tasks involve more complex daily activities that support independent living, such as:

  • Meal preparation and cooking
  • Managing medications and appointments
  • Household tasks like cleaning and laundry
  • Shopping for groceries and essentials
  • Handling finances and bill payments
  • Using public transport or driving

Why are ADL assessments important?

An ADL assessment helps identify strengths, challenges, and support needs, leading to practical solutions that enhance independence. These assessments are often used for:

  • NDIS funding applications (e.g. home modifications, assistive technology)
  • Aged care support planning through My Aged Care or DVA
  • Rehabilitation and hospital discharge planning
  • Assessing home safety and mobility needs
