At Living to the Max, we work with people to develop the skills, confidence and routines that help them engage more meaningfully in everyday life – whether that’s getting through the school day, returning to work, managing daily responsibilities or simply feeling less overwhelmed.
How can occupational therapy support mental health?
Mental health can impact many areas of daily life, including motivation, emotional regulation, organisation, energy levels and the ability to participate in activities that matter to us.
Occupational therapists work alongside individuals to understand the challenges they’re experiencing and develop practical strategies that support their goals and routines.
This might include:
- Developing emotional regulation and coping strategies
- Creating structure and routines in daily life
- Breaking tasks into manageable steps
- Supporting executive functioning skills like planning, memory and organisation
- Adjusting environments to better support sensory, cognitive or physical needs
- Exploring interests, values and meaningful activities that create a sense of purpose
Importantly, support is tailored to the individual. There is no one-size-fits-all approach.
Signs someone may benefit from OT support
Sometimes the signs are obvious, while other times they build gradually over time. A person may benefit from OT support if they are:
- Feeling constantly overwhelmed by everyday tasks
- Struggling to maintain routines like cooking, self-care or household tasks
- Experiencing chronic stress, anxiety or loss of motivation
- Finding it difficult to return to school or work
- Having challenges with planning, organisation or memory
- Avoiding activities or environments due to sensory overwhelm
- Finding it difficult to consistently engage in meaningful daily activities
The goal is to support the individual to feel more capable, confident and supported in everyday life.
What does OT for mental health look like day-to-day?
OT support usually starts with getting to know the person and understanding what matters most to them.
Together, goals are identified and broken down into realistic, achievable steps. Sessions may involve practicing everyday activities, developing routines, problem-solving barriers or building strategies to better manage stress and overwhelm.
Occupational therapists also work closely with families, support teams and other health professionals to ensure supports are consistent and aligned.
This collaborative approach helps create practical strategies that work not just in sessions, but in real life.
Small changes can make a big difference
Sometimes the most meaningful outcomes come from small, everyday moments.
One occupational therapist recently supported a participant who relied entirely on his mum to prepare meals and snacks. Together, they practiced simple tasks like cutting fruit and making a sandwich.
With time and repetition, he became more confident preparing food independently. This meant he was able to safely spend short periods of time at home on his own, something that also gave his mum a sense of freedom she hadn’t experienced in a long time.
These moments might seem small from the outside, but they can have a significant impact on confidence, independence and wellbeing for both participants and families.
Practical strategies to support mental wellbeing
Mental wellbeing looks different for everyone, but some simple strategies that may help include:
- Breaking larger tasks into smaller, manageable steps
- Choosing a few “non-negotiables” each day to maintain a sense of achievement
- Building in reset activities like walking, journaling, meditation or quiet time
- Staying socially connected in low-pressure ways, even if it’s just sending a text or visiting a local café
- Creating simple routines that reduce decision fatigue and overwhelm
The key is finding strategies that feel realistic, supportive and sustainable for the individual.
At Living to the Max, we believe meaningful progress often starts with understanding the person and supporting them to participate in everyday life in ways that feel achievable, empowering and meaningful to them.
