For participants with intellectual disability or vision impairment, social events like school formals can bring a mix of excitement and uncertainty. These events are often milestones in a person’s social development, but they can also present challenges that make participation feel overwhelming without the right support.

Our Occupational Therapists in Adelaide work closely with NDIS participants to build the skills and confidence they need to take part in meaningful experiences. From preparing for a school formal to navigating everyday social situations, our therapy sessions often focus on communication skills, self-confidence and emotional regulation.

Our recent sessions with one participant focused on school formal preparation including conversation skills, managing social settings, and navigating big events with confidence. While we can’t always predict how things will unfold, Occupational Therapy gives participants the tools and strategies they need to feel more prepared and empowered in these moments.

We later heard that the participant had a fantastic time at her formal—and even made it to the after-party, where she danced with a new friend. It’s a reminder that the role of an Occupational Therapist goes far beyond checklists and assessments. It’s about helping people build the confidence and capacity to engage fully in life, whatever that may look like for them.
