Manual Handling

Manual handling tasks are responsible for over 35 per cent of compensable injuries within Australian workplaces with 50 per cent of all lost time injuries being sprains and strains, mainly to the back and neck. Over half of those who have time off work with back pain suffer another attack within a year. Two thirds of back injuries are attributed to poor manual handling skills.

A hazardous manual task, as defined in the Model Work Health and Safety Act (WHS) Act, means a task that requires a person to lift, lower, push, pull, carry or otherwise move, hold or restrain any person, animal or thing involving one or more of the following:

  • Repetitive or sustained force
  • High or sudden force
  • Repetitive movement
  • Sustained or awkward posture
  • Exposure to vibration
