Home modifications, aids & adaptive equipment

Home modification refers to converting or adapting the environment in order to make performing tasks easier.  It aims to enhance mobility and access, reduce accidents, and support independent living.

At Living to the Max Occupational Therapy Services, we specialise in the prescription of a wide range of home modifications and assistive and adaptive equipment in Adelaide, normally after an Activities of Daily Living (ADL) assessment has been undertaken. This assessment subsequently informs the modifications and/or equipment required.

Common home modifications and assistive/adaptive equipment in Adelaide include:

  • Removal of hazards (ie clutter, throw rugs, floor mats)
  • Grab rails to showers, toilets or home entries
  • Prescription and design of landings, platform steps and access ramps according to Australian standards
  • Assistive equipment to enhance participation and independence in daily activities including showering, dressing, washing, cooking, gardening and community access
  • Aids and adaptive equipment to enhance mobility including walking aids, mobility scooters, shower chairs, toilet seat raisers, wheelchairs, electric lift recliner chairs, bed mobility items and electric beds
  • Bathroom modifications such as roll-in showers and other access measures

We also have extensive experience in complex home modifications resulting in our registration to a select provider panel authorized by the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA) to prescribe complex home modifications under the NDIS.  Such examples include:

  • Stair lifts
  • Ceiling track hoists
  • Ramps
  • Environmental control systems
  • Internal access, bathroom, toilet and kitchen modifications, including significant redesign to promote wheelchair access (and at times need to cater for a wheelchair and ambulant user).

Our Occupational Therapists have completed many major home modifications which have included the removal of walls in the bathroom/toilet to increase circulation space and removal of baths to create a level access shower with appropriate drainage and floor gradient; widening of internal and external doors; modifying external access to provide improved access within the confines of existing structures, and considering the most logical and suitable access point to the home.

We have also redesigned a number of wheelchair accessible kitchens, bathrooms and toilets following the demolition of existing spaces, to provide safe and accessible environments.  And, having worked with a number of quadriplegic clients, we have prescribed automated door openers and Environmental Control Units (ECUs) that can be operated via a wheelchair switch or sophisticated eye gaze and scanning technology.

Once prescribed and pending your approval to proceed, we would be happy to coordinate home modifications on your behalf.  This would include advice about what government funding and/or Medicare and private health rebates are available.  We are also authorised to provide these services as part of the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS).

At all times, we ensure the utmost transparency, ensuring that we source the most cost-effective solutions available.  For your own peace of mind, we have no financial interest or affiliation with any equipment or home modifications supplier or other providers.   If however, you would prefer to source equipment yourself, we can provide you with a list of providers who would be happy to assist.

Once home modifications have been completed and/or equipment received, we can provide you with follow up assistance to ensure a safe introduction of the prescribed intervention.

Over the past 18 years, we have  successfully completed home modifications to the required Australian standards for a wide variety of clients and funding bodies including the Motor Accident Commission, Transport Accident Commission, Allianz, WorkCover SA, Public and Private Trustee, Disability SA, Lifetime Support Authority, Territory Insurance Office, Julia Farr Housing, Housing SA, Department of Veterans’ Affairs, private clients and NDIS participants.
