Narelle Atkinson

Position title: Senior Occupational Therapist
Office phone: (08) 8331 0566
Geographical areas covered (OT only): Metropolitan Adelaide. Other areas by negotiation.

I currently provide OT intervention to a broad range of clients including private, NDIS, LSA and CTP clients. I have particular interest and skills in upper limb therapy and will provide treatment in-home or in-clinic. One thing I do love is that we get to see people within their own environments and where they are most comfortable, and that everyday is a new challenge. I don’t think I could ever get bored with the type of work or the variety of people we meet along the way, and being able to think outside the box to problem solve for clients and help them reach their goals on a daily basis.

I am also responsible for the portfolio of neurological conditions and upper limb therapy, as this has always been an area of interest for me throughout my career. I am currently working on updating resources and assessment tools for upper limb treatment and keeping abreast of the latest evidence-based research.

I graduated with a Bachelor of Applied Science (Occupational Therapy) from the University of South Australia in 2010 and have worked across a variety of settings in both the private and public sector throughout my career. Before joining Living to the Max, I worked in a variety of roles at the Northern Adelaide Rehabilitation Service, including Day Rehabilitation, Rehab in the Home, Inpatient geriatric/orthopaedic rehabilitation and on the inpatient neurological ward. I have also worked in community aged care for Home Support Services and Clinical Care Professionals.

I have gained comprehensive skills in upper limb therapy with particular interests in:

  • Telerehabilitation
  • Electrical stimulation for upper limb rehabilitation
  • The use of robotics, upper limb supports and splinting

I am also an accredited FIM (Functional Independence Measure) assessor, with extensive experience in:

  • Sensory, cognitive and Activities of Daily Living (ADL) assessments
  • Home modifications, including complex modifications
  • Assistive Technology (AT) prescription
  • Pressure care management.

Personally, I spend time running about and entertaining our two energetic kids or putting myself through a fitness war with my husband – which will likely involve lots of burpees, handstand push-ups or anything in between. We love staying active and I tend to be very competitive. I also enjoy letting my creative side out with an interest in makeup and hairstyling.
